Description: You should have listened when your mother said, Eat your fruits and vegetables. About half of all people over age 60 have diverticulosis and 10 to 25 percent of those people will develop diverticulitis, both a form of diverticular disease, which many doctors believe is caused by a low fiber diet or a diet lacking in fruits and vegetables. Diverticular disease occurs when people have small pouches, called diverticulum, in the lining of the colon or large intestine that bulge outward through weak spots. Treatment may vary from diet changes to surgery, depending on the seriousness of the problem. During the free program, Timothy Adams, MD, a colon and rectal surgeon at Kenmore Mercy Hospital, will discuss the causes, symptoms, and treatment of diverticular disease.
