Awards

The Network in Aging strives to recognize individuals and organizations throughout Western New York whose work has benefited elders and their families. We present several different awards throughout the year. Members may nominate individuals and organizations for these awards.  See the links on the left for the most recent recipients of these awards.

Dr. Evan Calkins Award for Meritorious Service

The “Dr. Evan Calkins Award for Meritorious Service” is designated to honor a person who has made a significant contribution to the field of aging in Western New York.

Award Criteria

  • Advocate on behalf of the elderly.
  • Make a positive contribution to the delivery of services to the elderly.
  • Increase public awareness of adverse conditions affecting the elderly.
  • Expand the understanding of the aging process though research and/ or education.
  • Bring about positive change in public policy with respect to the elderly.
  • Work to develop positive social attitudes toward the elderly.
  • Raise the consciousness level of the elderly regarding their potential

Program Award of Excellence

The “Program Award of Excellence” has been established to showcase a program that has been successfully implemented to enhance the Western New York geriatric citizenry.

Award Criteria

  • The program award nominee should have clearly identified a need within the community for their program.
  • Funding for the program may be varied and not limited to but including private groups within the community, religious groups or local government.
  • The program should be innovative, structured and well received by a significant number of the geriatric population.

Jerry Flaschner Humanitarian Spirit Award

The “Jerry Flaschner Humanitarian Spirit Award” was established in 2006 in honor of the late Jerry Flaschner and is designed to recognize an individual who has demonstrated the same concern for elders in the Western New York Community as exemplified by Jerry and his "no problem" attitude. Jerry was a member of the Network in Aging board of directors, the publisher of "Living Prime Time" and an active volunteer for many important causes. The nominee should share Jerry's belief that "The Best is Yet to Come," and translate that belief into action.

Nominee should be a local individual who best exemplifies the mission of the Network in Aging of WNY, Inc. Each nominee should have accomplished much within the community by their pursuit, courage, enthusiasm, and zeal for the Elders of Western New York. They also should have demonstrated stability,
innovation, perseverance and a commitment to diversity and community in all that they do. Special consideration will be given to the candidate(s) who addresses the mental, spiritual, physical, social and/or environmental well being of aging individuals.
